To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddy and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: ‘Can I go inside your heart?’

When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay.

Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

But Other Mommy needs an answer.

One of the best novels I’ve read in the genre of horror in terms of its storytelling technique, Incidents Around The House is definitely one for all fans of fright. It’s a chilling story of family dysfunction, trauma and disintegration as seen through the eyes of an eight year old child, brilliantly captured by Josh Malerman’s choice of prose and structure. It will have you turning page after page, the story pulling you in with its sense of intrigue and urgency. It also perfectly demonstrates that when it comes to horror, less is truly more, as Josh largely leaves the descriptions up to the reader’s own imagination, the most frightening thing of all. Whether you ultimately enjoy the story itself or not is a matter of personal preference, but I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone for its storytelling technique alone.
