He always has. But he’s just learned he’ll be forced to retire at his next birthday. With no friends and nothing to look forward to, the lonely future he faces terrifies him.

He realises it’s finally time to be honest about who he is. He must learn to ask for what he wants. And he must find the courage to look for George, the man that, many years ago, he lost – but has never forgotten

I had read so many 5 star reviews for Albert Entwhistle and was worried that it might not be able to live up to my expectations but what an absolute joy it was to read, streaming tears of joy and happiness

We meet Albert as he’s nearing retirement and has nothing to look forward to – his world is small and he has kept himself shut away from everybody all his life; his only relationship has been a tender and loving gay relationship as a teenager but he hasn’t ever spoken about it or accepted it himself.

A change of heart means that Albert starts opening up about his sexuality and building friendships with people around him, and he quickly finds that what he was most afraid of was all in his head.

Beautifully told, some lovely characters and a lot of love in there

I really loved this book, it’s was uplifting and a joy to read, bringing a sense of hope and a reminder that it is never to late to change to get a chance at happiness.

The characters were a joy to learn about a were rounded, their back stories more full then first impressions implied, as is often the case in real life.

Delighted to have found and read this wonderful book.

I’m a bit lost looking for the words I need to express how wonderful this book is when at the same time there are some aspects of the story that are heartbreaking and uncomfortable to read.
At its heart this is a story about a man who in the 1970s in a northern English town was in love with another boy George: a relationship and the fear surrounding how it ended was something that came to define Albert for the rest of his life, the life he let people see, and the life he kept private for himself.
This book is about Albert’s ‘secret’ life becoming the life he is willing to share with others, which is beautiful, if at times bittersweet because of the history behind why it had been a secret in the first place.
