Sleep takes C.L. Taylor into new territory; a whodunnit… or is that a whowilldoit?

As the synopsis says, Anna needs to get away from her past following a life-changing incident. And what better way than to take herself off to the remote Scottish isle of Rum. The choice of Rum as a location is inspired. Not only does it set up a reason that the suspects are kept together, it forces the narrative to concentrate on these core characters with no outside surprises.

Anyone who has read C.L. Taylor’s previous work, do not fear, all the traits we have come to know and love are there, the back stories unfolding, the brilliantly set up and executed misdirects… and those chapters, the ones from the perspective of the antagonist, the ones that have you shuddering quietly.

The set up for the big reveal is spot on (I did work it out, but just pages earlier) with story threads tying together neatly, what happens next wasn’t what I was expecting, but oh so satisfying and without giving anything away there is one final turn of the cards that is so well thought out.

Sleep is the second book I have read this year (the other was ‘The Chalk Man’ by C.J. Tudor) that has mental illness as a theme, in this case PTSD; this is sensitively handled (I know the author lost a dear friend, so this is a very fitting tribute) and as someone who has suffered from anxiety and panic attacks in my past I felt the issues suffered by the specific characters were realistically portrayed.

I read this in five or six big chunks, it is an easy read, but gripping, you find you have devoured a lot of pages when you put the book down… to sleep, ironically in my case!

Another triumph by C.L. Taylor, I am already looking forward to her next book.
