It’s been months since aspiring journalist Kian Andrews has heard from his ex-boyfriend, Hudson Rivers, but an urgent text has them meeting at a café. Maybe Hudson wants to profusely apologize for the breakup. Or confess his undying love…. But no, Hudson has a favor to ask – he wants Kian to pretend to be his boyfriend while his parents are in town, and Kian reluctantly agrees.

The dinner doesn’t go exactly as planned, and suddenly Kian is Hudson’s plus-one to Georgia’s wedding of the season. Hudson comes from a wealthy family where reputation is everything, and he really can’t afford another mistake. If Kian goes, he’ll help Hudson preserve appearances and get the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in media. This could be the big career break Kian needs.

But their fake relationship is starting to feel like it might be more than a means to an end, and it’s time for both men to fact-check their feelings.

A romantic comedy where the protagonist is a heartbroken recent graduate who’s career choice is still described as ‘aspiring’ and who’s ex-boyfriend comes from a rich family with connections to the industry they want to join. Oh and their ex needs a favour and promises to help their career, which any Millennial and Gen-Z can tell you still rings true; sometimes it is still who you know.
It is a classic, romantic comedy plot line, but the protagonist is Kian Andrews, a gay black man, who is (not) over is his gay, black ex-boyfriend Hudson Rivers. Kosoko Jackson’s debut novel is a fantastic romantic story, about people who’s lives and loves are under represented, but are no different than anyone else’s: complicated!
It is a must read for anyone who craves reading a good love story about adults out in the world trying to navigate life and love’s intricacies. (p.s. there are some naughty scenes for those who like a bit of lust in their rom-coms).
