On the remote island of Neverness, the villagers’ lives are entwined with nature: its enchantments, seductions and dangers.
There is May, the young fiddler who seeks her musical spirit; Madden Lightfoot, who flies with red kites; and Verlyn Webbe, born with a wing for an arm. Over the course of a generation, their desires, gossip and heartbreak interweave to create a staggeringly original world, crackling with echoes of ancient folklore.

Folk is a collection of short stories centered on the inhabitants of a village called Neverness. It is not your average village and is full of odd traditions and customs. Each chapter is about a different character, but they often reflect on events from previous stories and they also pop up in each others tales over a period of years. The stories cover real and heavy subjects such as depression, domestic abuse, addiction, love and loss. Throw in some supernatural aspects and some gorgeous descriptive writing and this becomes a wonderful collection of enchanting folk/fairy tales.
