James Chiltern boards the 23:50 sleeper train from London to Edinburgh with two pork pies, six beers and a packet of chocolate digestives. At 23:55 he sends a message to all 158 people in his contacts, telling them that he plans to end his life in the morning. He then switches his phone to flight mode.

He’s said goodbye. To him, it’s the end of his story – and time to crack open the biscuits. But across the world, 158 phones are lighting up with a notification.

Phones belonging to his mum. His sister. His ex-best friend.

The woman who broke his heart. People he’s lost touch with. People he barely knows.

And for them, the message is only the beginning of the journey.

  1. Bert

Contacts is a fab book about the impact of suicide on those left behind. I loved the way it concentrated more on the people around James and how it changed their lives, and eventually brought them all back together. It was funny in places and was an engage read, but I would have liked to spend more time at the end exploring a bit more.

  2. Sara Scott (verified owner)

I thoroughly enjoyed Contacts. I felt the storyline was very well thought out and used a subject which is often skirted around but instead was embraced. There was a great balance between humour and the more emotional and heartfelt moments so it didn’t feel forced or like it was trying too hard to make a point. Having chapters focus on different characters each time makes it easy to get into and become invested in the storyline.

  3. Sophia Bennett

This felt like a very timely book. I was invested in the story of James, as his train sped towards Edinburgh and his friends and family – who had contributed to his despair – raced to find him. At the end, Mark Watson made his message clear: use the power of technology for good, to reach out to people you know who may need it. With that in mind, I did exactly that the next day and was so glad I had. I shall often think of James and his rubbish jumpers, and the life he deserved to have and could have, with just a little care from those around him. Thanks for recommending it, Bert.
